Enabling Wireless Zero Configuration
This guide only applies to Windows XP.
Some built-in Wireless cards in laptops have a 3rd Party Utility installed, which takes control of the Wireless card away from Windows.
In these cases, it is necessary to enable a service called "Wireless Zero Configuration".
- Click on the Start Menu. Click on Run, type in "services.msc" (without the quotes). Press OK.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the list, locate the service named "Wireless Zero Configuration", and double-click on it.
- Change the "Startup type" to Automatic, then check the "Service status".
If the Status is Started, simply press the Apply button at the bottom of the window, and then press OK.
If the Status is Stopped, press the Start button. Wait untill the service has started, then press the Apply button, and then press OK. - Close the Services window.
- Click on the Start Menu. Click on Run, type in "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes). Press OK.
- Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection, choose Properties.
- Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab at the top of the window.
- Make sure the 1st tick-box, "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is TICKED. Then press OK.
Windows is now configured to retain control of the Wireless card, and you can now attempt to connect the Wireless Connection to a near-by Wireless Network.
